  • The trip covers some of the most beautiful and lesser-known parts of the Eastern Cape. It is one of the best routes to enjoy the remote mountains and passes and is part of South Africa’s hidden gems. Add to this some historical and charming towns and places of interest, and you will see why this trip is a wonderful journey not to be missed.

    Day 1: Saturday 9 October

Today we follow the main N1 route, traveling through the Free State, with stops on the route made at Kroonstad and Bloemfontein to view the sights of these historical towns. Overnight at the Gariep Dam for the night. The distance for the day is longer than normal, but it is mostly on a very safe, dual carriageway.

    Day 2: Sunday 10 October

We continue the drive today through remote parts of the Eastern Cape. Queenstown for lunch. After lunch, it is another very scenic drive over the Nico Malan pass before we arrive in the Katberg region. The last part of the drive takes us through the towns of Fort Beaufort and Alice, and then it is uphill towards the charming village of the Hogsback. On arrival, we check into the Arminel Hotel for a 3-night stay. The hotel has wonderful gardens and footpaths to explore.

    Day 3 + 4: Monday 11 & Tuesday 12 October

The next two days are set out to explore this wonderful mountain area, and the charming attractions, and gardens in the area. Various drives and walks will be undertaken to the various points of interest, with enough relaxation time in between. Some of the attractions to be visited will be, the Eco Shrine, the Labyrinth, the Edge, views of the 3 “Hogs”, the Arboretum, and various gardens that are open to the public during springtime. It is truly a delight for garden lovers.

    Day 5: Wednesday 13 October

Today we travel down the mountain on a scenic route to the town of Bedford. Here we will be visiting the museum and experience the hospitality of the locals. A lovely lunch will be enjoyed at a favorite coffee shop in town. After lunch, we drive alongside the Fish River towards the charming historical town of Cradock. On arrival in Cradock, we check into the “Tuishuise” for the next two nights’ stay. It is a collection of wonderfully restored old houses depicting the Dutch and English Settlers' period.

    Day 6: Thursday 14 October

The town of Cradock and its surroundings have many interesting attractions. Visit the Olive Schreiner Museum and then we also visit the Mountain Zebra National Park to explore the unique landscapes and animals of this park. The scenery in the park varies from grass-covered plateaus to wooded ravines and is a sanctuary for the rare Cape Mountain Zebra, and herds of Eland, Springbok, Kudu, Black wildebeest, Blesbok, Red Hartebeest, Cheetah, Meerkat, and over 200 species of birds.

    Day 7: Friday 15 October
