
The Overberg region is a region with beautiful beaches, mountain ranges, abundant birdlife, fynbos, rolling wheat and canola fields and splendid coastal vistas with great whales watching during winter months.
De Kelders is a small town in Walker Bay, about two hours drive from Cape Town. Protected coves and inlets provide the ideal conditions for Southern Right Whales to mate and give birth, and, every year between July and November, these giant creatures can be spotted in the waters.
Day 1: Guest House, De Kelders (Wed, 9 September)
Guest will be picked up from their homes, and transferred to the airport. Time for the pickup, transfer and flight will be confirmed closer to the date.
Your host will be waiting for you on arrival. Depart from the airport on a scenic 2 hour drive towards Gansbaai. A convenience and lunch stop will be done on route. Arrive in the scenic town of Gansbaai, where we will be staying for the first 2 nights of the trip. Relax, unpack, and enjoy the beautiful gardens and ocean at the Guesthouse.
Maybe even spot Whales from the Guesthouse
The town has a great village atmosphere, and it is easy to explore it and the wonderful gardens on foot. Dinners will be enjoyed at some of the many restaurants in the area.

Day 2: Guest House, De Kelders (Thu, 10 September)
It is a day for nature, today we visit another coastal area in the Overberg region. We travel amongst the rolling hills filled with wheat and canola fields towards Struisbaai and the southernmost point of South Africa at Agulhas, where we enjoy lunch in Struisbaai - maybe even see the Stingray's that sometimes visit the harbour in the shallow waters. We also visit the region’s long stretches of beach and the lighthouse and maritime museum. It is a beautiful area, and we spend quality time here. Returning to our Guesthouse in the afternoon to relax before dinner
Day 3: Rouxwil Country House, Overberg (Fri, 11 September)
Overberg
Literally meaning ‘over the mountain’ in Dutch, the Overberg region extends from the Hottentots Holland Mountains, east of Cape Town, to the start of the Garden Route near the historic town of George. It serves as the perfect base to explore the spectacularly scenic landscapes which are characterised by fertile farmlands, a series of mountain ranges, tremendous plant diversity including the uniquely South African fynbos and a rocky coastline that makes it a haven for outdoor adventures
It is time to move on the road takes us to the coastal town of Hermanus, where it is easy to view the southern right whales that are usually found in the bay below. Walk along the cliffs of Walker bay, and enjoy these unique giants of the sea. We spend quality time viewing the whales, and also explore the town. Lunch will again be taken on route at an interesting coastal venue. For those interested, we can arrange viewing of the whales from a boat. This needs to be arranged beforehand and at an additional cost. We travel to Rouxwil Farm via the Hemel and Aarde Valley road. Dinner for the next 3 nights at Rouxwil
Overnight: Rouxwil Country House
Situated in the heart of the Overberg, one and a half hour from Cape Town, this central location is perfect for exploring the magnificent Cape Winelands, from Hermanus to Franschoek, from Greyton to Caledon – with vast, rolling hills of wheat fields, orchards and majestic mountains, vineyards and fynbos in between.
Rouxwil offers five luxuriously decorated suites, farm style hospitality, exclusive privacy and magnificent unspoiled views. Breakfast and dinner are served in the Manor House, either in the tastefully decorated lounge, the intimate old farm kitchen or on the big spacious veranda with a huge fireplace.
Day 4: Rouxwil Country House, Overberg (Sat, 12 September)
Today we will explore the wonderful Franschhoek Valley. We travel alongside the Theewaterskloof dam, and over the Franschhoek mountain pass (a lovely Fynbos region), with its stunning views of the valley below. In Franschhoek, we will visit the wonderful Huguenot Museum and its lovely gardens as well as the wonderful Dutch Reform church. We will also do some wine tasting and allow time for guests to explore all the wonderful art galleries and shops in town. Lunch will be enjoyed in town, and we return to the guest farm
Day 5: Rouxwil Country House, Overberg (Sun, 13 September)
After breakfast and a tour of the farm to see how the Farmer manages the sheep, canola fields etc... we depart to Betty's Bay where we will visit the Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens and the Penquins at Betty's bay Stoney Point Nature Reserve.
We return to Rouxwil late afternoon.
Day 6: End of Itinerary (Mon, 14 September)
After a last farm breakfast, it’s time to return to Cape Town for your return flight to Johannesburg. On arrival in Johannesburg, guest will again be met by a colleague and transferred home.
